About

Dispectu is derived from the Latin word ‘dispectus’, meaning ‘insight into’ or ‘evidence’. We want to provide insight by structuring, analyzing and visualizing large data sets by building interactive, intelligent applications based on open (web) standards.

Projects

KBKranten Ngramviewer

The KBKranten Ngramviewer is an application similar to the PoliticalMashup Ngramviewer. It visualizes the term frequency of a phrase in Dutch newspapers between 1840 and 1995 as a percentage of the total amount of phrases occurring in a single year.

The ngramviewer searches in the Historische Kranten of the Dutch Royal Library, a corpus of digitized Dutch newspapers. The corpus contains approximately 84 million articles, and after analysis, approximately 250 million unique phrases.

Oral History Today

Oral History Today was developed as a CLARIAH demonstrator project. The goal was to create a research environment for scholars to explore and engage with “oral history”-collections: audio-visual archives with personal narratives of eyewitnesses to historical events.

In the Oral History Today project, we collaborated with the Beeld en Geluid institute, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Spinque.

ScholenVinden.nl

ScholenVinden is an application that aims to unlock the treasure trove of data that the OpenOnderwijs API contains for parents of prospective high school students in the Netherlands. It allows users to indicate which aspects of a school they find important, and to what extent. The application displays which schools fit the profile best. Due to the interactive nature of the application, we hope to encourage users to explore the data set by playing around with different parameters.

ScholenVinden.nl was awarded a prize in the OpenEducation “Apps voor Ouders” challenge. For a more thorough explanation of how the application works, we created this screencast.

OpenOnderwijs API

With the Open Education programme of the Open State Foundation we developed an Open Education API. This API enables developers to access data about the Dutch educational system, gathered from sources as DUO and the Onderwijsinspectie.

By unlocking this data, developers and designers can create applications for exploration of this data, and help citizens find information in this stockpile. Also, analyzing this data can help (governmental, educational) organizations to monitor, optimize and improve their processes.

CoMeRDa

In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam we developed a system that provides media students and researchers with different interfaces to multimedia archives, such as the Beeld en Geluid catalogue, photo collection and scanned television guides.

As part of the BRIDGE project, a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam and the Beeld en Geluid institute, the system provides for extensive usage logging, from query logging to mouse tracking, facilitating information retrieval and interaction research.

Ngramviewer

Inspired by the Google Books ngram-viewer, the PoliticalMashup ngram-viewer is an application that allows the user to search the Dutch parliamentary proceedings using up to 7 "grams", phrases containing up to 7 words, and visualize the use of those phrases over time.

The application structures, analyzes and visualizes all words ever spoken in the Dutch parliament: for each word, or combination of words, spoken since 1814, we can show how often the phrase is used, and attribute those phrases to political parties and individual politicians.

The PoliticalMashup ngram-viewer was demoed at Apps voor Democratie, an exclusive event at which the Dutch parliament made some of its data available to the public, and is now in an early beta stage.

PentaPolitica

During our studies, we started PentaPolitica. PentaPolitica is a project aimed at collecting and archiving social media messages of Dutch politicians, such as tweets, blog posts, Flickr photos and YouTube videos. Also, it enabled users to create an aggregated RSS-feed for a set of politicians and parties, such that the user has one tailored newsfeed.

Widgets displaying the PentaPolitica timeline were used on the websites of Trouw and BNR Nieuwsradio in context with articles and a videostream.

The software, as well as the collected data, were later incorporated in the PoliticalMashup project. Also, the data was archived by DNPP, the Dutch documentation center for political party history.
